Profile of Success: Priscilla Garcia
"The manager told me I had excellent credit!"
“I started taking financial literary classes and receiving one-on-one financial coaching at the financial resource center at Alfred E. Burr Elementary School a year ago with the goal of restoring my credit.
While in the classes, you learn about the little things that seriously impact your ability to save; for instance, the check cashing places that take a percentage of your money to give you cash, and the tax preparers who offer rapid refunds. I always thought I didn’t make enough money to put some aside, but with the coaching I received, I could see how much money I was wasting. Now I can say with confidence that I have completely changed my savings habits.
This program gives you the tools needed to achieve your goals, but it also shows you how to put them into practice. Recently my car was totaled in a motor vehicle accident. I didn’t know what I was going to do. Being a single, working parent, a car is not a luxury, it is a necessity. I am very involved in all of my daughter’s school activities as well as being a PTO committee member. I also work nights and weekends. All of this, as well as my day to day responsibilities, made not having a car strenuous.
When I was approved to purchase a new car, the manager from the dealership told me I had excellent credit. It made me so happy, and proud of what I had accomplished.
But I’m not done yet! Now I’m continuing to save towards my next goal, which is to continue my education. I would like to continue my education in Human Services so I can work more closely with individuals to make a bigger impact.”
