Literacy Kits
United Way creates opportunities for children to have bright futures and for caring volunteers to make a difference in our community. We are fixing problems by finding simple, fun solutions to help engage children in learning. Since August 2012, our United Way mobilized more than 500 United Way Readers, volunteers, to help children learn to read early on in life.
To continue helping more kids learn, there's an opportunity for individuals and workplaces to join with community partners to help young children build the literacy and social skills needed to succeed through literacy kits.
What are United Way Literacy Kits?
- Literacy kits inspire creativity among volunteers and bring books to life to deepen children’s reading experience.
- Volunteers design related props, games or other activities to make reading interactive and enjoyable for everyone involved.
- Making literacy kits is easy and exciting!
Share the Joy of Reading! Create United Way Literacy Kits.
Learning to read by the end of third grade is the most important predictor of a child’s future success. Yet, many kids miss this important milestone. Kids who fall behind find it harder to catch up, causing frustration and often a sense of “giving up.”
Literacy kits can be put together in various ways during any period of time. Volunteers can work as a team by making an assembly line of crafts and props, work individually and collectively, or partner in teams of two...and have fun while doing it!
This activity is an opportunity for employees and individuals to take part in a meaningful and unique experience --- take advantage of your lunch hour, spend the morning or afternoon creating kits and much more! It’s an opportunity to bond with colleagues, build morale and improve lives all at the same time, and the experience can be easily customized to meet your community goals.

" It was fun and interactive to make the props for the books. We really felt like we added a personal touch to helping kids enjoy reading. It offered a very different aspect to the working day and allowed us to help our community at the same time. "
