Getting Back on Track
The passing of a loved one is undoubtedly a difficult time. For 28 year-old elementary school teacher, Ian, it was more than he ever could have imagined. Last year, Ian lost his father unexpectedly, forcing him to manage the family estate completely on his own. Before the tragedy of his father’s passing, Ian thought he was finally on track to a successful future. He worked hard to put himself through college, earn a Bachelor’s degree in elementary education and worked several part-time jobs to get ahead in his career.
Now, as the sole administrator of the estate with no inheritance, Ian paid out of pocket to make up for the expenses he incurred, completely washing out his savings. He invested his hard-earned dollars to pay the mortgage and for general up-keep of his family home. This left Ian in a very challenging financial situation. Weeks of unforeseen bills added to the stress of losing his father, making him even more anxious when it came time to do his and his father’s taxes.
For several weeks, Ian researched potential options for tax preparation. With limited extra money and a slightly complicated tax situation, he had a difficult time finding a good option. In the past, Ian used online services to do his taxes and paid a substantial fee.
Thankfully, Ian learned about MyFreeTaxes. He immediately was eager to find out more about filing his taxes for free. Ian learned that MyFreeTaxes was simple, safe and secure, and it even offered free filing for his father’s estate. The step-by-step process made is easy to prepare and file, regardless of having complicated returns.
"Filing my taxes seemed so overwhelming to me after losing my dad. Being able to file free of charge using MyFreeTaxes was a huge relief because it meant that I could use my full refund to pay down debt and other bills", Ian said. “I also appreciated how quick and easy it was to file our taxes given my difficult situation and busy schedule. Since my father died, I haven’t been able to do much for myself. MyFreeTaxes empowered me to do my own taxes, and I felt relieved knowing I could count on this great service.”
Separate from dealing with his father’s estate, Ian is busy balancing full-time work while pursuing a master's degree in special education. He can now look forward to saving for the future in hopes of being financially secure when he’s ready to start a family of his own. MyFreeTaxes helped Ian during one of the most difficult times of his life. He will continue to be an advocate for the program and hopes it will provide others with the same relief he felt.
