40 Years and Counting: A Proven Solution that Builds Stronger Families, Stronger Communities
January 29, 2015
What exactly is this resource? Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This Friday, January 30, 2015 is EITC Awareness Day, marking the 40th anniversary of the passage of the EITC Act.
As tax season kicks-off, help spread the word about the valuable tax credit, EITC, and free tax preparation services available to working families in our region through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program and MyFreeTaxes. At local VITA sites, IRS-certified volunteers work one-on-one with clients to prepare and electronically file state and federal income tax forms at no charge and ensure that taxpayers claim the proper tax credits and refunds. Using MyFreeTaxes, eligible individuals and families may prepare and file their taxes online. Both help to raise awareness about available refunds and credits, such as EITC.
Last tax season, through VITA and MyFreeTaxes, 10,400 working individuals and families in central and northeastern Connecticut received $27.5 million in federal tax refunds and credits, including $6.8 million in federal EITC - money coming right back into our community.
United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut, The Village for Families & Children, Human Resources Agency of New Britain, Inc., and a network of municipal and community providers in the Greater Hartford, New Britain and the Windham regions, partner to make the VITA and MyFreeTaxes program available for working people in our community. With support from our generous contributors and volunteers, free services also help connect hard-working families with opportunities to keep more money in their wallets.
Please join us in raising awareness about EITC and spreading the word about free, VITA tax preparation services. Those with household incomes up to $53,000 should call 2-1-1 for a site in Greater Hartford, Enfield or the Windham Region, and call 860-612-3983 for a site in New Britain. There are also opportunities to learn how to save and grow refunds. Those with household incomes up to $60,000 are encouraged to file at MyFreeTaxes.com; help is available online. These services are available until Tax Day, April 15.
2015 VITA and MyFreeTaxes partners include: City of Hartford/Opportunities Hartford Initiative; Community Accounting Aid and Services; Hartford Foundation for Public Giving; Human Resources Agency of New Britain; Liberty Bank Foundation; United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut; United Way of Connecticut/2-1-1; The Village for Families & Children; and Walmart Foundation.
